Pada tahun 1965 pemerintah melalui Penetapan Presiden (Penpres) No. 9 tahun 1965 mengintegrasikan BKTN ke dalam Bank Indonesia dengan nama Bank Indonesia Urusan Koperasi Tani dsn Nelayan (BIUKTN), dan hanya berjalan satu bulan. Karena pemerintah kembali mengeluarkan Penpres No. 17 tahun 1965 tentang pembentukan bank tunggal dengan nama Bank Negara Indonesia.
Dengan adanya ketentuan tersebut BKTN tidak boleh tidak harus diintegrasikan dengan Bank Indonesia (BI) bagian II bidang rural. Sementara Nederlandsche Maatschappij (NHM) unit II bidang Ekspor impor (EXIM).
Dua tahu kemudian keluar Undang-Undang No. 14 tahun 1967 tentang Undang-undang Pokok Perbankan dan Undang-undang No. 13 tahun 1968 tentang Undang-undang Bank Sentral.

Status BRI dirubah menjadi Perseroan Terbatas (PT) pada tanggal 1 Agustus 1992. Hal tersebut berdasarkan Undang-Undang Perbankan No. 7 tahun 1992 dan Peraturan Pemerintah RI No. 21 tahun 1992.
Pada tahu 2003 resmi menjual sebagian saham Bank BRI, yakni 30%, dimana pada mula seluruh saham tersebut 100% milik pemerintah Indonesia.
Sehingga dengan begitu Bank BRI dibawha naungan PT. Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk hingga saat ini.
